Not since G.W. Pabst’s 1956 effort, ‘Letste Akt’ (The Last Act) has a German film attempted to tackle the subject of their most famous leader, Adolf Hitler. Breaking a long-standing taboo, the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, has made a film that has sparked much debate in Germany and the rest of the world.
Downfall features an astonishing performance by Bruno Ganz as history’s most notorious figure. Providing an unprecedented and controversial insider’s perspective, the film is a gripping insight into the madness and desperation of Hitler in the final hours of the war as the Russian Army closes a ring around Berlin. Beautifully photographed and brilliantly acted, this tour de force is at once dramatic, harrowing and remarkably authentic.
The basis for the screenplay by writer-producer Bernd Eichinger came from two key sources: Joachim Fest’s book “Inside Hitler’s Bunker: The Last Days of The Third Reich”, the recognition that the horrifying epic of Hitler and his people during his twelve years in power was reflected in those last twelve days in the bunker; and the memoirs of Hitler’s private secretary, Traudl Junge, in Melissa Mueller’s book, “Until The Final Hour: Hitler’s Last Secretary”, which provided an invaluable insight into the character of the man, and those final, fatal few days of the war.

In this outstanding Oscar winning, psychological and political thriller, we get a fascinating insight into the lengths and depths that the East European government went to in order to keep tabs on the lives of its population in the 80s. When cold and brutal official Wesler is given the task of spying on acclaimed playwright Dreyman and his actress girlfriend, he relishes the task, knowing that if he uncovers subversive behaviour he will gain favour with his boss. But the longer he listens in on the couple, their friendships, passions and ideas, the more he realises that his own life and the harsh political regime are lacking in colour and joy in many respects. Slowly he begins to doubt the morality of his job and politics. As the lines between orders and compassion become blurred, Wesler becomes more involved with his subject, walking a dangerous path between his duty and his new found reality.

The film starts with a prologue set in 1800s Poland, a Yiddish couple expecting a guest to dinner whom the wife thinks died last year, that serves as a perfect flavour of what to expect from the next 100 minutes: funny, dark and with a pervading sense of doom that slowly takes hold and grips like a vice.
From there the film jumps forward to follow Larry Gupnik, a husband, father, and University professor, who seems to have done the right thing all his life, only for it now to unravel on him at every turn. His wife leaves him for an overbearing new lover who moves into the family home and forces Larry into a motel, his career at the University is under threat, his brother is being investigated by the police, and his kids are either smoking pot or can’t stand him.
“A Serious Man is a wonderfully odd, bleakly comic and thoroughly engrossing film”.

Ang Lee’s latest picture takes a look at the origins of the Woodstock festival in New York in August of 1969. It is based on the autobiography of Elliot Tiber, the son of two Russian Jewish immigrants who maintain a not very successful farm in upstate New York. James Shamus wrote the screenplay together with Tiber, which is a delightful one. The film gets great support from the outstanding performance of Imelda Staunton as Eliot’s mother Sonia and this is an actress who truly is able to play a wide variety of roles and still remain unique in every one of them.
Taking Woodstock is about Woodstock, the people who surrounded the event, as any mass event that is about a main attraction that brings everyone together. It is as such an excellent human-interest story that is warm and entertaining.

The Collector is a supernatural drama about a soul-collector who gets permission from the Devil to try to save the souls of his “Clients” during their last 48 hours on earth…
Morgan Pym looks 30, but was born in 1322 AD, a monk who sold his soul to cure the woman he loved of the plague. But when his deal ended 10 years later (as all deals with the Devil do), she died, and Morgan went to work for the Devil collecting souls, rather than go to Hell himself.
650 years later, Morgan begins to rediscover his own humanity, and makes a new deal with the Devil, which allows him to try to help his clients make amends for the bad luck caused by their bargain. Morgan often fails, but never gives up trying to prove that everyone, no matter what they’ve done, can earn redemption…perhaps even himself.

In 1966—British pop music’s finest era—the BBC played just two hours of rock and roll every week. But pirate radio played rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day. And 25 million people—over half the population of Britain—listened to the pirates every single day.
Recently expelled from school, Carl (Tom Sturridge) has been sent by his mother to find some direction in life by visiting his godfather, Quentin. (Bill Nighy). However, Quentin is the boss of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea, populated by an eclectic crew of rock ‘n’ roll DJs.
They are led by The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman)—big, brash, American, god of the airwaves, and totally in love with the music. He’s faithfully backed up by his co-broadcasters Dave (Nick Frost)—ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny; Simon (Chris O’Dowd)—super-nice and searching for true love; Midnight Mark (Tom Wisdom)—enigmatic, handsome and man of few words; Wee Small Hours Bob—the late night DJ, whose hobbies are folk music and drugs; Thick Kevin (Tom Brooke)—possessor of the smallest intelligence known to mankind; On-The-Hour John (Will Adamsdale)—the newsreader; and Angus ‘The Nut’ Nutsford (Rhys Darby)—possibly the most annoying man in Britain.
Life on the North Sea is eventful. Simon finds the woman of his dreams and is married on the boat?only to be left by his bride the next day. Gavin (Rhys Ifans) returns from his drug tour of America to his rightful position as greatest DJ in Britain and, in doing so, clashes with the Count. And Carl discovers the opposite sex and who his real father is.
Meanwhile, pirate stations have come to the attention of government minister Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh) who is out for the blood of these lawbreakers. In an era when the stuffy corridors of power stifle anything approaching youthful exuberance, Dormandy seizes the chance to score a political goal and The Marine Broadcasting Offences Act is passed in an effort to outlaw the pirates and remove their ghastly influence from the land once and for all.
What results is a literal storm on the high seas. With Radio Rock in peril, its devoted fans rally together and stage an epic Dunkirk-style hundred boat rescue to save their DJ heroes. Some things may come to an end, but rock ‘n’ roll never dies. Directed by Richard Curtis.

Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918 to the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man’s life can be. Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett with Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas and Julia Ormond, Benjamin Button is a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.

Prohibition in the United States has led to an organized crime wave in the 1920s and early 1930s. Various gangs bootleg vast amounts of alcohol and control their businesses with violence and extortion. The problem is most serious in Chicago, where gang leader Al Capone (Robert De Niro) has almost the whole city (even the Mayor of Chicago) under his control, and supplies poor-quality liquor at high prices. Treasury Department agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) is put in charge of leading the crusade against Capone and his empire. Ness’s initial strategy is to conduct raids using a large squad of uniformed officers, but his first attempt fails when he breaks into a warehouse storing umbrellas (although it is implied by Capone’s reaction to the newspaper headline about Ness’ mistake that it was indeed a liquor warehouse, but his men had been tipped off by one or more corrupt officers). A group of people find themselves trapped in the backwoods of West Virginia, fighting for their lives against a group of vicious and horribly disfigured cannibals.
It’s hunting season in the deep back woods for Three Finger and his family of hideously deformed inbred cannibal hillbillies! The fight for survival is futile and each successive killing is more gruesome than the last as the cannibals relentlessly stalk a group of attractive young hikers and a group of escaped convicts after their bus crashes on a remote country road.
Probably one of the most underrated horror film series “Wrong Turn,” and the sequels feature a group of deformed West Virginia hillbillies who have turned to cannibalism to satisfy that burning hunger inside.

Will Ferrell stars as washed-up scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, transported back through time. A long time. Rex and hunted by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only friend —a primate called Chaka (Jorma Taccone)—to find their way out of this alternative world. Escape from this supposedly humdrum expedition gone haywire and they’re heroes. Get left behind, and they’ll be forever languishing in the Land of the Lost.

The plot revolves around Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), the human caught in the war between Autobots and Decepticons, having visions of Cybertronian symbols, and getting hunted by the Decepticons under the orders of their long-trapped leader, The Fallen, who seeks to get revenge on Earth by finding and activating a machine that would provide the Decepticons with an energon source, destroying all life on the planet in the process.
Despite Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen receiving negative reviews from film critics it was a box office success, achieving the highest Wednesday opening gross in history, bringing in $62 million in North America and close to $100 million worldwide; this is also the second-highest opening day gross of all time, behind only The Dark Knight‘s $67.8 million. It is currently the third highest-grossing film of 2009 worldwide (behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs)

In the action-thriller Public Enemies, Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the fascinating and factual story of infamous Depression bank robber John Dillinger (Depp), the charismatic bank blagger whose daring raids made him the most wanted of J. Edgar Hoover’s newly formed FBI and its top G-Man, Melvin Purvis (Bale). Dillinger was a folk hero to much of the downtrodden people of the time. No one could stop him. No gaol could hold him. His charm and bold prison breaks made him almost loved almost everyone from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to the US public who hated for the banks that had sent the country spiralling down into the Depression. (No relevance to today then…)
But while the exploits of Dillinger’s gang, later including the madman Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) excited many, Hoover decided to capitalise on the pursuit of Dillinger as a way to promote his Bureau of Investigation into the federal law enforcement agency that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One. Hoover despatched Purvis, the “Clark Gable of the FBI”, to sort it out. Nevertheless, the Dillinger gang outthought and outfought Purvis’ men in manic chases and firefights. Only after recruiting a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly enrolled as agents) who were real gunfighters, and planning and executing a notorious betrayal from the infamous “Lady in Red” on the Chicago crime boss Frank Nittiwere, were Purvis and the FBI able to catch up with Dillinger.

“Inglourious Basterds,” Quentin Tarantino’s Nazi-era ode to the power of cinematic historical revision, won the Screen Actors Guild’s biggest award on Saturday night for movie ensemble acting — something of a surprise win for the film that featured an international cast of stars, first-timers and unknowns.
In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis.
“Inglourious Basterds” is composed of two intertwined stories broken into chapters combining fictitious and factual historic events. The two stories, the tragic tale of orphaned Jewish girl Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent) and that of an oddly funny group of American soldiers, called “the Bastards”, create introspections into the meaning of glory, destruction, and propaganda.
Familiar faces are scattered throughout the film from creator of “the Office” B.J. Norvak to “Austin Powers“ star Mike Myers. The standout performance of Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by the always-evolving Brad Pitt, is both comical and clever and the role of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa, Christoph Waltz, is so evil that, within the scope of the film, he some how manages to overshadow Hitler.
While the film is visually graphic, it is the ideas of violence rather than explicit visuals that litter the film. These violent scenes, from scalping to strangulation, are more dramatic than visually accurate.

Brittany Murphy died on the morning of December 20, after she went into full cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
She was 32.
A 911 call was made at 8:00 AM from a home in Los Angeles that is listed as belonging to her husband, Simon Monjack, the Los Angeles City Fire Department reported.
Brittany Murphy was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her time of death was listed as 10:04 AM.
Brittany starred in such films as “Just Married,” “8 Mile,” and “Girl Interrupted.” Murphy was reportedly fired from last film, “The Caller,” after reports she was problematic on set.
She had been ill with flu-like symptoms in the days before she died and prescription medications were taken from her home, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Monday.
Tests are still being conducted to determine what killed the 32-year-old star, who collapsed on Sunday in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home.
Paramedics tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The flu-like symptoms were reported to authorities by members of Murphy’s family.
Assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said an autopsy has been completed on Murphy’s body, but a determination of the cause of death won’t be made until the office receives the results of other tests, including toxicology and an analysis of the brain and other organs.
This typically takes four to six weeks, Winter said, adding that examiners found “no evidence of trauma to the body.”
Police also said there was nothing suspicious about Murphy’s death.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
“The sudden loss of our beloved Brittany is a terrible tragedy,” her husband, Simon Monjack, and her family wrote in a statement. “She was our daughter, our wife, our love, and a shining star.”
Born in Atlanta on Nov. 10, 1977, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and moved to Los Angeles with her mother to pursue an acting career. She broke into the business in the early 1990s with small roles in various commercials, TV series — including Frasier and Party of Five — and movies.
Her part in Clueless led to larger projects and her role in 8 Mile led to wide recognition. “That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not,” she said in an interview in 2003.
Murphy also found work in voiceovers, including voicing the character Luanne on the animated series King of the Hill as well as Gloria the penguin in Happy Feet.
She is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, set for release next year.
Throughout her career, Murphy mentioned her mother as being the bedrock of her success.
“When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me,” Murphy said in 2003. “I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn’t stifle any of that. She always believed in me.”
Before her marriage to Monjack, she dated Ashton Kutcher, who co-starred with Murphy in the romantic comedy Just Married.
Kutcher posted a Twitter message Sunday morning about Murphy’s death: “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon.”

“Knowing” is among the best science-fiction films I’ve seen — frightening, suspenseful, intelligent and, when it needs to be, rather awesome.
The plot involves the most fundamental of all philosophical debates: Is the universe deterministic or random? Is everything in some way preordained or does it happen by chance? If that questions sounds too abstract, wait until you see this film, which poses it in stark terms: What if we could know in advance when the Earth will end?
In 1958, as part of the dedication ceremony for a new elementary school, a group of students is asked to draw pictures to be stored in a time capsule. But one of the students, a mysterious girl who seems to hear whispered voices, fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead. Fast forward 50 years to the present: A new generation of students examines the contents of the time capsule and the girl’s cryptic message ends up in the hands of young CALEB MYLES. But it is Caleb’s father, professor TED MYLES (Nicolas Cage), who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As Ted further unravels the document’s secrets, he realizes it foretells three additional events—the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve Ted and his son. When Ted’s attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place. This gripping supernatural thriller charts one man’s faltering steps towards belief in the ultimate order of the universe even as he finds himself surrounded by mounting chaos. With the reluctant help of DIANA WHELAN (Rose Byrne) and ABBY, the daughter and granddaughter of the now-deceased author of the cryptic prophecies, Ted’s increasingly desperate efforts take him on a heart-pounding race against time until he finds himself facing the ultimate disaster—and the ultimate sacrifice.
Directed by Alex Proyas.

Roland Emmerich has done it again. After destroying half the world in ‘Independence Day‘ and ‘Godzilla’, the destruction-meister has set his sights on all of Mother Earth in what is probably one of the most anticipated films of the year.
’2012′ cashes in on the Internet-stirred fears of an end-of-the-world prediction for Dec. 21, 2012, a prediction often attributed to the Mayans, whose calendar ended on that date. But leave it to Emmerich to figure out in what ways and how doomsday arrives (no spoilers, here). Suffice to say that this demolition derby is breathless.
Don’t worry about a coherent plot line or nuanced characterizations. That’s not why you’re going to see this one. ’2012′ exists to stimulate your eyes, ears and brain with nonstop big-screen excitement. The critics know this and generally have given the film kudos for what it is: one big WOW.
Synopsis

Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis stumbles on the same information. While the world’s leaders race to build “arks” to escape the impending cataclysm, Curtis struggles to find a way to save his family. Meanwhile, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes of unprecedented strength wreak havoc around the world

Those prepared to hate the reboot of STAR TREK–whether they’re diehard fans or those in the anti-sci-fi camp–may be convinced to lower their shields after seeing this fun, action-filled film. Best known for creating mythology-driven series like LOST, J.J. Abrams has imbued his version with the elements that have made his shows such mind-bending entertainment while still keeping the soul of the saga intact. STAR TREK begins with an attack by an impossibly advanced Romulan ship captained by the tattooed, snarling Nero (Eric Bana). Among the survivors is the infant version of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), who grows up to wreak havoc on the Iowa countryside. When Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) meets an adult Kirk, he encourages him to join Starfleet, giving him the opportunity to meet Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the rest of the characters audiences have loved for decades. Abrams has assembled a fine cast who seem to be aware of their predecessors but never resort to impressions. Both Quinto and Pine do a fine job with their portrayals of Kirk and Spock, and Karl Urban couldn’t be better as Leonard McCoy. The supporting players–Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), and Anton Yelchin (Chekov)–all capture the essence of what drove their characters, though their screen time is limited. STAR TREK manages the nearly impossible: it pleases hardcore fans with plenty of in-jokes and references (and an appearance by the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy), but it doesn’t alienate newcomers with tons of technobabble. The action and effects rank with any other top-tier summer blockbuster, but there’s plenty of humor to balance the excitement. For anyone who (wrongly) felt he had to hide his trekker tendencies, this undeniably cool version of STAR TREK offers a chance to wear the “geek” label with pride.

GI Joe
An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer
GI Joe is a noisy, frenetic, CGI-laden blockbuster that exists to advertise a range of paramilitary toys, but compared to its peers (ie, the dreaded Transformers movies) it’s orchestrated with tremendous skill.
The plot is insanely complicated, and yet somehow it all fits together. Similarly, there’s a colossal number of characters, and yet they’re all distinctive, and the actors have fun with their roles. If you’re an 11- year-old male it could be the best film you’ve ever seen…

An adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s story, where Max creates his own world–a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.
Spike Jonze has fearlessly plunged ahead to weave whimsical movie magic to bring Maurice Sendak’s 1963 “Where the Wild Things Are” to the screen.
The story, as millions of children and grown children know, tells of a rambunctious boy, sent to bed without his supper, who then encounters fearsome-looking but surprisingly gentle creatures when his bedroom turns into a mysterious forest. The film does surmount one of its two difficult challenges: Through puppetry and computer animation, the filmmaking teams have successfully put a world of childhood imagination on the screen.

A bleak and chilling mood piece, The Machinist gets under your skin and stays there. Christian Bale threw himself into the title role with such devotion that he shed an alarming 63 pounds to play Trevor Reznik (talk about “starving artist”!), a factory worker who hasn’t slept in a year. He’s haunted by some mysterious occurrence that turned him into a paranoid husk, sleepwalking a fine line between harsh reality and nightmare fantasy–a state of mind that leaves him looking disturbingly gaunt and skeletal in appearance. (It’s no exaggeration to say that Bale resembles a Holocaust survivor from vintage Nazi-camp liberation newsreels.) In a cinematic territory far removed from his 1998 romantic comedy Next Stop Wonderland, director Brad Anderson orchestrates a grimy, nocturnal world of washed-out blues and grays, as Trevor struggles to assemble the clues of his psychological conundrum. With a friendly hooker (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and airport waitress (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón) as his only stable links to sanity, Trevor reaches critical mass and seems ready to implode just as The Machinist reveals its secrets. For those who don’t mind a trip to hell with a theremin-laced soundtrack, The Machinist seems primed for long-term status as a cult thriller on the edge. –Jeff Shannon

They say you can never go home again…because you never know when the ghosts of murders past are waiting to shatter the present. Such is the case in THE UNINVITED, an eerie and not-so-family-friendly entry in Hollywood’s ongoing fascination with remaking Asian horror films. Based on the South Korean chiller A TALE OF TWO SISTERS, the film first introduces us to troubled teen Anna (Emily Browning) as she prepares to be released from a psychiatric institution. Having witnessed the accidental death of her ailing mother, and having been saved from a subsequent suicide attempt, Anna knows that the road to recovery will be long and bumpy. Making the path more treacherous is the presence of Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), the mother’s nursemaid who has now become Anna’s father’s soon-to-be wife. Already bound by their resentment of her, Anna and older sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel), come to suspect Rachel of foul play when Anna is visited by the ghost of their dead mother. But as Anna and Alex prepare to reveal who Rachel really is, a more terrifying truth threatens to emerge and destroy the family forever. Directed by the Guard Brothers (Charles and Thomas), THE UNINVITED benefits from a strong mix of both established and up-and-coming actors. The result is a briskly paced tale of revenge that will leave viewers guessing until the final, fatal twist, and prove the validity of that other old saying: Every family has a skeleton (or more) in its closet.
